The Department of Foreign Affairs allows diplomats, consular officers or other official representatives to be accompanied during their posting to Canada by live-in domestic workers hired abroad. Domestic staff that do not live in the residence of their employers must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
t is the joint responsibility of the head of mission, organization or office, and individual employers to ensure that the working conditions of all individuals employed under the Domestic Workers Accreditation Program comply with the minimum provincial labour standards. Payment to the employee may only be made by cheque or bank transfer. Cash payments are no longer acceptable methods of payment. In Canada, there are also minimum wage requirements:
